Osteoarthritis is the most common form of joint disease in pets. It is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in one or more joints accompanied by inflammation and pain that progresses to a debilitating condition that can severely affect joint mobility and health.

Identifying Joint Disease
Your dog can’t explain what’s wrong with him, so it’s important to watch his non-verbal cues closely and take even subtle changes seriously. Signs that your dog may have joint problems:
- Favoring a limb
- Difficulty sitting or standing
- Weight gain
- Hesitancy to run, jump or climb stairs
- Decreased activity or interest in play
- Becoming less alert and responsive
- Attitude or behavior changes
It can be much harder to spot arthritis in cats. Cats are stoic when they don’t feel well and they rarely limp even in the presence of a painful condition like arthritis.
When it comes to arthritis in cats, look for any behavior changes that signal an underlying problem such as:
- Reluctance to jump
- Eliminating outside the litter box
- Decreased interest in family members and other pets
- No longer covering his urine or feces with litter
- Lack of appetite
- Becoming less active
- Sleeping more
- Muscle wasting in the legs
If a dog or cat appears to have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks – take him to your veterinarian for an evaluation. This may include a physical exam, X-rays or even more advanced diagnostic procedures.
