Dr. Barnett’s products have been used by over 3000 veterinarians in a clinical environment for the past 40 years!

Canine CogniPro is a scientifically formulated Veterinary Health Supplement that provides specific nutritional ingredients that have been shown to support brain and nervous system functions responsible for mental alertness, memory retention, decision making, complex problem solving, movement, and basic life functions such as temperature and heart rate.

CogniPro Provides Proactive Ingredient Support For:

  • Memory
  • Motor Skills
  • Mental Focus
  • Sensory Enhancement
  • Healthy Brain Function
  • Healthier Senior Years

Dr. Barnett’s Recommendations for:

Senior Dogs

Most senior dogs experience some level of mental decline as they continue to age. However, there is scientific evidence demonstrating that most cognitive issues can be managed and sometimes even reversed when seniors are provided the correct nutritional ingredients. For this reason, I recommend that all aging dogs be given my Canine CogniPro prior to and throughout their senior years. By providing the specific nutrients that feed the brain and nervous system you can slow the progression of cognitive decline and give your client’s best friend a chance at a happy and healthy senior life.

Injured & Recovering Dogs

The stress associated with injured, ill or recovering senior dogs can affect the brain causing the symptoms of cognitive decline to worsen. When stress is present, I would recommend the use of Canine CogniPro to help protect the brain. One thing to remember, proactive care is always easier and less expensive than trying to recover from mental decline once it has already begun.

Directions for Use:

Dosages may be administered once a day or split and provided twice daily. Sprinkle product onto any diet. Mix in or moisten to make a tasty, protein rich broth. To assure freshness and avoid settling, shake periodically, keep sealed, and store in a cool, dry place.

Whenever introducing a new Veterinary Health Supplement, it may be best to start with half the recommended dosage for the first week.

Canine CogniPro is a 100% highly concentrated powder that provides twice the value of Capsules, pills or chewable products that require as much as 50% inactive fillers and binders. We avoid those unnecessary ingredients and as a result AVN products do more with less while providing far more servings per container.

Caution: Consult your veterinarian before using it in dogs diagnosed with diabetes or intestinal blockage and when pregnant or lactating.

Key Ingredients in GastroPro

Phospholipids

Phospholipids are especially crucial to the health of cell membranes and neurotransmitters. Brain cell membranes are particularly rich in two phospholipids – phosphatidylserine (PS) and to a larger extent phosphatidylcholine (PC). PC provides the key nutrient choline required for the production of acetylcholine, which is primarily responsible for neurotransmission. More than 98% of choline in blood and other tissues is in the form of phosphatidylcholine. Thus, PC serves as a slow-release source of this essential nutrient, causing levels to rise for up to 12 hours after ingestion.

Phospholipids are abundant in an animal’s nervous system and have long been suspected of being involved in brain development and function. This partly explains the rationale for the use of phospholipids to enhance or preserve brain health and brain processes. Nutritional supplementation of PC complements the use of medication, behavioral enrichment, and environmental management in the treatment of canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

Studies in animals demonstrate that PC is also a potent antioxidant, which helps protect against one of the most important factors responsible for aging (free radical damage). By this and other mechanisms, PC also protects the brain and body tissues against a wide variety of adverse drug effects and various chemical toxins.

Ginkgo biloba

Gingko Biloba is collected from the dried leaves of the Maidenhair tree. Its antioxidant properties provide protection against oxidative cell damage that is caused by harmful free radicals. Researchers believe that Gingko increases blood circulation to the brain and other vital organs, and it has been widely used to improve memory, social behavior, the performance of everyday tasks as well as the symptoms of cognitive decline.

Gingko Biloba is a safe, effective herbal remedy that all veterinarians should consider using in conjunction with other treatment modalities for cognitive dysfunction cases.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) is an omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid that is essential in the development of the brain, nervous system and other important tissues of the canine body. Researchers have found that maintaining adequate levels of DHA in the brain improved cognitive memory immunologic and retinal functions.

Amounts of EPA and DHA in Various Animal Tissues:

L-Glutamine

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid (protein building block) in the animal body and participates in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid. Glutamine is converted to glutamate, which has several functions that are important for brain health.

Functions of glutamate include:

  • Strengthening or weakening of signals between neurons, which shapes learning and memory
  • As an energy source for brain cells
  • Conveys messages from one nerve cell to another
  • Sleep-wake cycle manager
  • Pain signaler

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is essential for brain and nerve function and for forming red blood cells. A deficiency of B12 can cause various signs and symptoms of memory loss and several studies have reported that supplementation has positive effects on memory performance.

L-Carnosine

L-Carnosine is a naturally occurring antioxidant the body creates and can be found in the skeletal muscles, lenses of the eyes, the brain, and the nervous system. Its antioxidant powers neutralize free radicals and prevent damage to cells. As with other naturally occurring substances inside the body, L-Carnosine levels gradually diminish as the body ages – this is why it needs to be supplemented in our senior pets. It is an essential compound for fighting off the aging effects of oxidation and maintaining a dog’s healthy mind and body.

Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome (CDS)

The physiological origin for cognitive dysfunction in aging dogs can be biological and/or nutritional. Aging is often associated with a decreased absorption of key ingredients required to nourish the brain. Aging also brings on an increase in oxidative stress due to free radical attacks that damage the protein, lipid, and nucleotide structures of the brain.
